CHAPTER FOURTEEN

AMELIE, APRIL, 1925

Amelie tucked the thick cream envelope deep into the pocket of her cardigan. She smiled at Duncan, the postman, and curled her fingers around the chubby hand of his little son, Hamish. Hamish had been a godsend to her this past winter, his company a delight during the rainy Highland days, with their foggy mornings, magnificent rainbows, and atmospheric clouds, days that had been made beautiful by the gray, snowy hills all lit up with beautiful Douglas fir.

But no matter how lovely the view, she’d realized she’d go mad sitting inside all day while Archie was busy managing the Carrig estate. And when Duncan had told her that his wife had begun working in the general store in the village, Amelie had stepped in and offered to look after Hamish while his father delivered the mail.

Amelie stood with Hamish near the bridge over the River Clois, watching Duncan wobble off on his bicycle, the mail packed in bags on a carrier that sat over the back wheel. She led Hamish up the fresh green lawn that ran up the slope to Carrig, dotted with cherry trees, whose pink-hued blossoms were vivid against the bright blue sky. Spring bulbs fluted in the sun at their feet, while across the glen, snow-capped mountains and hills full of flowers sat serene.

Amelie’s fingers curled over the envelope in her pocket. Scotland, sleepy, cold, achingly beautiful in winter, was coming to life in the spring. As summer rolled closer, there would be a whole host of events—Highland Games, weekly farmers’ markets, church stalls—and she, as Archie’s new wife, would be expected to take part. She’d already staved off requests to help at the village church, and to contribute on committees for the spring fair, but she knew that some of her neighbors viewed her reluctance to throw herself into village life as reclusive, and this only added fuel to some people’s gossiping about the fact she was French, aloof, and would never fit into Scottish country life. The last thing she wanted to be seen as was Archie’s bad choice, but, if she did not move out of the safe circle of people she’d placed around herself—Archie, Caitlin, her mother-in-law Mary—she’d risk the locals viewing her in exactly that way. A mistake.

Archie had pounded off early this morning, leaving a light kiss on Amelie’s forehead at breakfast, while gearing up for a day’s fishing at the loch. He’d gone off with his ghillie and Caitlin’s husband Malcolm, promising to bring home fresh trout or pike.

Amelie stopped, letting Hamish run around the lawn, his arms spread out like an airplane. She pulled out the thick envelope, tore it open, her eyes scanning the embossed card.
